{31 Days} Day 16: Beautify Your Life

Thursday, October 24, 2013

Today I'm featuring a guest post from a woman who is very, very dear to my heart - we've never met in person, but have been blog friends for years! I couldn't be happier to introduce Clare from Further Up

Not only is she the founder of The Catholic Young Woman blog, but she's also a recent newlywed who delights in living out a life of beauty and grace.

Enjoy her lovely post and be sure to pop over to her blog to say hello!

We girls have always been attracted to beautiful things. We love to dress up and feel beautiful. Our hearts are unexpectedly moved by a beautiful sight, a word, a smile. The desire for beauty is in every human, but we girls in general have a particular sensitivity to it.

I was blessed to attend a college that put a high priority on beauty, and I've made it my mission to gather it in and hold it close. These are five of the ways I've learned to make beauty a part of my everyday life.

1. Dress up. Dress up even if you're not going anywhere, but just because you're beautiful. Put on a cute dress. Do your hair. Wear pearls. Feel elegant and feminine just because.

2. Listen to beauty. I'm the kind of girl who will listen to all kinds of music depending on the occasion, but my life would not be as rich if it didn't include truly beautiful music. Listen to Ruhe Sanft, Mein Holdes Leben. Listen to Miserere. Don't think that this kind of music is limited to what you hear on those Classics for Babies CDs. Try it. Next time you're cleaning your room, having tea, or studying, listen to a Beethoven violin sonata or Vaughan William's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. This is not a box of Moonlight Sonatas and Odes to Joy. This is a whole world of beautiful variety.

3. Make real food. Coming out of college and straight into marriage meant coming from having three meals a day served to me in the commons to having to cook for my husband. And you know what? I love it. Real food is beautiful.

Leave aside the pre-packaged food once in awhile. Get out your pots and pans, your meats, your veggies, your potatoes, your rice, your whatever, and cook something up.

4. And then eat it. Dining these days seems to be quite the multi-task affair. While we eat we read, watch TV, and browse the internet. But take at least one meal every day to be just a meal. Sit down at the table with it. Pull out your fine china if you like.

Eat slow. Enjoy every scent and flavor in that tasty thing you cooked up.

5. Slow down. The world moves too fast. Don't get caught up in the whirlwind.

Peace and a slower tempo are really possible even in a busy day. Maybe you do have to hurry to class. But while you hurry, breathe deeply. Smile at the people around you. Notice the sky. Are there clouds today? What's beautiful about the world around you?

How do you like to beautify your life?
