Valentine's Day: The Day of Chocolate and Red

Thursday, February 14, 2013

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope your day has been lovely so far and that you have some fun plans for tonight, whether it's getting together with friends, going on a date, or curling up to watch your favorite romantic comedy (my personal favorite).

Chocolate, various hues of pink and red, romantic music…all trademarks of one of the most famous holidays. Valentine’s Day. The day of romance, love,sob-inducing chick flicks and the ultimate excuse to indulge unabashedly in chocolate sans guilt.

February is one of my favorite months, and not simply because it is my birthday month. I love Valentine’s Day. It happens to be one of my favorite holidays, and that’s coming from a girl who’s single. It is a fabulous day to treat yourself and celebrate your relationships with the people who are special to you – not just significant others. Friends, roommates, family members, etc.  I think Valentine’s Day is what you make of it.

So if you’re single this February and less than ecstatic about it, try looking at the day differently. Think of it as a special day to celebrate all the things that make you happy. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, here are some ideas to make your day noteworthy:

Celebrating with someone special this year? Make plans to cook dinner together; you’ll skip the crowded restaurants and have a special meal without breaking the bank. If you don’t have plans, get together with some friends for a movie and treat night. Bake cupcakes (le chocolate, of course) or heart-shaped cookies and decorate them with sprinkles and candy hearts.

Girls, wear something pink or red – dress up! Even though we all have classes or work, it’s still a holiday, so why not wear something fun?

Guys, don’t be afraid to look snazzy too. You’ll earn points from the girls.

And when in doubt, go for a bow tie. Always.

Here's two red outfits I spotted out and about campus:

There's red and pink everywhere!

And since it’s not V-Day without chocolate and sugar…

Order a Starbucks Mocha frappuchino with a pump of raspberry syrup for a  pink and chocolate drink.
Or try a White Mocha  hot chocolate.
   Double chocolate chunk muffins. Amen.
If one of CG’s “Sweetheart” drinks: Ring by Spring, Chocolate Covered Strawberry Mocha or -if you’re feeling vindictive -the Flaming Idiot, a delicious concoction that (unlike your ex-boyfriend) you won’t regret.
Panera Bread’s red velvet crinkle cookies  are amazing.
Make raspberry and white chocolate scones or a pan of fudgy, gooey brownies drizzled with decadent chocolate syrup.
Chocolate truffles.
Chocolate everything.
  Everything dipped in chocolate.
Repeat all of the above.

I love romantic comedies, so if you're looking for something to watch tonight, here some of my favorite films that will make you laugh, sniff and say“Awwww!”:
  •          Sleepless in Seattle
  •          P.S. I Love You
  •          While You Were Sleeping
  •          Beauty and the Beast
  •          Tangled
  •         Hitch
  •          My Big Fat Greek Wedding
  •          Roman Holiday
  •          Sabrina
  •          Leap Year
  •          Pride and Prejudice

And of course, you can't have Valentine's Day without love songs!

(Quite possibly my favorite song ever!).

But Jenny and Tyler's "One Eyed Cat" is a close second. They are an adorable husband and wife duo.

(Couldn't resist!)

And for those of us who haven't met our special someone yet...
Michael Buble's "I Just Haven't Met You Yet." :)

No matter your romantic status, Valentine’s Day is just that: a day. But it is a day to celebrate the people and the things that bring us joy. So make a card for someone, bake your favorite recipe, surprise a friend with some flowers, make some party food and eat together with your hall, and treat yourself to your favorite dessert.

If you’re a girl, throw on some red lipstick or a pair of heels.

And this goes without saying, but eat some chocolate. It is Valentine’s Day, after all. ;)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Thank you for this fun post! :) Way to rock the red lipstick! I'm not brave enough for that but pulled out my pink rind-stoned cowgirl boots. My sister would add "Flipped" & "October Baby" to the chick flick list. If you haven't seen them you should! ~E

Just had to ask, is that a Dr. Who bow tie? And I loved the post, thank you sooo much for posting it! I might try a few of the movies this year!

Yes, it is! Caught me - I'm an ardent Doctor Who fan, or "Whovian," as the title seems to be. ;) You're so welcome - hope you enjoy the films!

My pleasure! I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed it. I think everyone should try red lipstick...I was initially intimidated as well, but now I love wearing it. Although those boots don't sound so shabby either. I haven't seen Flipped or October Baby, but I've heard great reviews for both!
