Modest Monday: Falling for Fall

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Just joining the Modest Monday party? Here's the original post. Each Monday, I post a modest, stylish outfit that I wear along with some thoughts on modesty.

Why? Because I believe you don't have to sacrifice fashion for purity.
 Modesty does not = frumpy.
These are outfits I really, truly wear in my day-to-day life. I'm a girl determined to live a life of purity, modesty, and plenty of style. :)

Happy Halloween! Or happy official fall, if you're not a Halloween person...

Y'all, fall is finally here. It's cold and windy and quite chilly in the morning on the way to class.

And I love it!

I am such a fall baby, and while I did appreciate the warm, balmy days of summer, I've been raring to break out the scarves, boots, and indulge in all things pumpkin. Now I can!

Shirt: Gap
Skirt: thrifted
Cardiagan: thrifted
Scarf: Wal-Mart
Shoes: Payless
Leggings: thrifted
Beanie: local store
Purse: Ross

This outfit was so comfortable and stylish...I started with green and gold, then brought in the other hues and somehow my outfit fit the fall theme perfectly!

This burgundy cardigan is a favorite, as anyone who knows me can testify. I wear it probably twice a week. Although you can't see it underneath the scarf, I'm also wearing a dark sage green Gap shirt. I may have waxed eloquent on the store before, but I love their clothes. Soft, stylish, and breathable with a bit of stretch...always. (Gap's prices, though? Not so much. Most of my Gap pieces either came from the clearance rack or thrift stores.)

I am so in love with pumpkin. It's definitely one of my favorite vegetables: what other produce can be savory, sweet, fabulous in chilis, pies, muffins, scones, as well as serve as a centerpiece and carving entertainment?

(And yes, people. Pumpkin is an important accessory with any fall outfit.)

When it comes to high heels, wedges are my shoe of choice. They give me height as well as balance. And unlike stilettos, I can walk quickly in them! Any cute shoes that don't kill my feet are a plus. These are versatile enough for dressy outfits as well as more casual daytime ones.

A pop of green!

Red nails are always fun...as are scarves. I've worn this one before and I love how the rich butter-gold adds a splash to both outfits.

Booo!
Whether you're trick-or-treating or spending the evening in, why not dress up in a cute outfit to celebrate the fall and the end of October?

November's tomorrow! I feel like I say this every three or four weeks, but where did the month go????

Time to stock up on pumpkin.

Thanksgiving may be peeking its head around the corner, but this girl intends to soak up every moment of this delightful season.

Happy fall, y'all.

Friday Favorites: Fall Edition

Friday, October 26, 2012

It's been a long, jam-packed week, but the weekend is finally here and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. You know those days where you have so much it's just not logistically possible to do it all? Yep, the past four days have been like those.

But it's Friday! I have class, yes, but only two and then it's sweet, sweet freedom.

So in the celebratory spirit, here are some of my favorite things right now in this lovely fall month of October:

     Bright colors.

I'm obsessed. Something about wearing jewel hues on chilly, grey days make me oh-so-happy.

Hot chocolate with a side of whipped cream.

\
Um, yes please. Just do it...it's fall. Life's too short not to enjoy the delightfully sweetened whipped peaks of life.

                                                                        Fall-colored nails.

I'm lovin' the autumn hues: pumpkin-orange, goldburgundy, jungle-red, black, purple, and even grey

Scarves.

I've been steadfastly rocking them for the past month, regardless of the sunny, warm weather. It's FINALLY getting cool over here and I am so overjoyed about proper scarf weather, it's almost frightening.

Pumpkin everything.

Specifically pumpkin scones and my new favorite drink from Starbucks: a nonfat, iced pumpkin-spiced Chai latte. So good. Give it a whirl!

Winter squash. (And my littlest sister.)

Roast it, cube it, saute it, mash it - you name it, I'll eat it. I'm especially fond of butternut, acorn, and pumpkin, but I discriminant against no squash. I love them all.

Try Jenna's roasted squash soup, this amazing-looking pumpkin fettichini, or this mouthwatering harvest pizza of Jessica's, Angela's black bean and butternut squash burritos, and Emily's fantastic black bean and pumpkin chili <---- I LOVE this + make the recipe every fall!

(And now I'm hungry...)

Happy weekend, friends. Hope it's a lovely one. :) May you breathe deep, sleep well, drink in the sunlight and breeze, and soak up God's goodness. <3 p="p">

A Loud Cry for Stillness

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

There's a hunger in my heart.

An aching, yearning.

A deepening of spirit. A tug at my soul.

I know what it is.

Who it is.

Whose Voice is calling me.

Amidst the scurrying of life, the mounting sheets of notes and essays, the clicking of keyboards, and the constant thinking, thinking, thinking.....

there's a small, still Voice that says:

'Come to me and rest...just be. Because that is good enough for Me.'

I serve a jealous God who loves me deeply. And in this flurried autumn season, this whirligig of life, when I find a spare, rare moment to catch my breath, I'm reminded of this...and how He wants my time. What an honor - and yet what a challenge. I'm challenged to make space in my day for Him. It's there, so I should take full advantage of it.

Because even if it's only for a moment, I can shut out the cacophony of outside voices, grades, tests, deadlines, to-dos and just rest in Him. In peace.

And that is the strength I need to keep going.

He didn't promise us it would be easy.

But He did promise to always be with us.

And I'd rather it that way, wouldn't you?

Hello, everyone! Due to the craziness of the weekend and classes yesterday, I'm a day late with Modest Monday. I don't have a new photographer at the moment, so getting photos is a tad tricky. Despite everything that's going on, I'm still planning to keep up with Modest Monday on Mondays...but if you see it a day or so late occasionally, you know why. :)

In other words, last week's Modest Monday can be completely disregarded. It's sunny, breezy, and bright again!

I come prepared, though!

Dress: Cato's
Cardigan: Gap - thrifted
Ring: Claire's
Belt: Icing
Shoes: (hidden in this pic) Payless

It was a lovely day. I went to Mass with my family and then we grabbed some frozen yogurt. Love those colors!

This ring makes me so happy...

Sparkles!!

(Got to love little sisters.) Hope your day is a glorious one. :)

Modest Monday: Bring On the Coats and Cafes

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, fall!

You're being rather sporadic and shy. You come and you go, and can't quite make up your mind if you want to stay longer than a day. But on the rare occasions that you have so far, it's been utterly, blissfully lovely.

Florida can have its perpetual sunny beach weather.

I'm a boots and scarves girl.

But I'm especially a coat and cafe (on a crisp, cold, glorious day) girl forever.

I was happy enough in this outfit...but then I ended up at Panera Bread, which is currently one of my favorite places on earth (Um, can we talk about their ridiculously addictive pumpkin muffins and piping hot soups?), and my day was utterly made.

Coat: Sunshine Pacific
Cardigan: Jonathon Martin (thrifted)
Skirt (thrifted)
Boots: Passed on zee auntie
Shoulder purse: Ross
Earrings: Clare's
Blossom clip: Forever 21

Ah, zee coat. I love it so. I adore the structured pea coat look with large, elegant buttons and an impeccable cut.

Let's talk bags - no, never mind. Let's talk fall hues. I am obsessed with the color mustard. Not only does it work for summer with bright colors, but it carries over perfectly into fall, where it truly shines in all its subtle, yet stylish glory.
Fall is its season (pun intended. ;)

I actually bought this bag the week I moved into college, because all my other purses were too large or the small, handbag size. I needed something light that I could sling across my shoulders when I went around campus. I found this delightful bag for about $10 and I couldn't be happier. It's lightweight, goes with nearly everything because it's a solid, and is casual enough for everyday wear, but seamlessly transitions to church or nicer events.

And I mean, what's a cold snap if anything but boots weather?

Especially in Texas.

Copper-hued boots + grey + mustard + black = fall palate!

Under my coat, I wore a black camisole and a lovely grey print cardigan, compliments of Goodwill. The black-and-grey theme continued with black leggings and a soft, grey knit skirt.

I threw in some shine for fun - silver earrings, copper and cocoa brown glasses (keepin' things classy).

And just because you can never have too much black - and I was feeling whimsical - a delicate black blossom clip to go with the flower print of the cardigan.

It was an utterly perfect day for coats and cafes! Now if only those days would come back and stay....
Sigh.
(Cooooome back, fall! I miss you. I'll bake you pumpkin cookies if you do. Deal?)
